Fralock manufactures custom high-reliability products with DuPont™ Kapton® polyimide. Kapton® is a high-performance polyimide film that is widely used in many industries due to its ability to withstand extreme temperature ranges, resist chemicals, and block heat and UV radiation, along with its light weight and durability. It is used in a variety of applications that require robustness and thermal stability in harsh environments.

Kapton® films are engineered with exceptional thermal and electrical properties, and there are numerous types with diversified properties to fit a variety of critical applications. Fralock can design and fabricate Kapton® parts and components from cut and die-cut sheets to custom laminates and flexible circuits.

DuPont™ Kapton® Polyimide Films

Kapton B film is an opaque black polyimide film that is treated on both surfaces, offering a good balance of physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics across a broad temperature spectrum.

The film exhibits an excellent equilibrium of physical, chemical, and electrical attributes spanning a wide range of temperatures. It exhibits excellent dimensional stability even at elevated temperatures.

Kapton® is a matte black color with a visually pleasing appearance while maintaining crucial physical properties. In contrast to coatings or dyes, the homogeneous black pigmentation provides superior color integrity that resists flexural cracking and abrasion. These qualities render it ideal for numerous industrial applications where low reflectivity, opacity, or aesthetics are required.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES FOR DUPONT™ Kapton® B POLYIMIDE FILM AT 23°C (73°F)

Kapton® CRC is a rugged film with an excellent balance of chemical, physical, and electrical properties that operate over a wide range of temperatures, even at extremely high temperatures.

Kapton® corona-resistant film is used as an insulator and can withstand the destructive effects of corona discharge. The resistance to corona discharge provides extended life and improved operational efficiencies compared with conventional insulation materials.

Kapton® 100CRC polyimide is a homogeneous film with high resistance to coronal partial discharge when compared to traditional polyimide films. In addition, Kapton® CRC provides superior thermal, physical, electrical, and chemical resistant characteristics that are typical of Kapton® polyimide films.

Primarily developed for use as an electrically insulating material for high voltage environments in which corona discharge may occur, Kapton® CRC is typically used for industrial motor and generator applications such as magnet wire, coil, turn to turn strand, slot liner and ground insulation materials. Additional applications include laminating with other materials such as DuPont™ Nomex® paper or mica insulations which provide tailored electrical insulation characteristics.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF DUPONT™ Kapton® 100CRC POLYIMIDE FILM

Treated on both sides, Kapton® EN polyimide film has an excellent balance of electrical, physical, and chemical properties and can operate over a wide range of temperatures.

Kapton® EN is a high modulus dielectric film that offers premium performance when used as a dielectric substrate for flexible printed circuits and high-density interconnects. It is ideal for use in very fine pitch circuitry due to its superior dimensional stability, high modulus, lay- flat, and a coefficient of thermal expansion that matches copper.

This film is offered in thickness from 5 μm ultra-thin to 50 μm thick, providing a high degree of design flexibility for customers.

Along with the excellent electrical characteristics and etch capability provided by Kapton® HN and VN films, Kapton® is laser ablatable and exhibits very low moisture absorption.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF DuPont™ Kapton® EN Polyimide Film

Kapton® EN-A, EN-C, EN-Y, EN-Z polyimide films are dielectric films for very fine pitch circuity and next generation IC packaging applications. This film is used in applications where surface quality and CTE control are critical.

Kapton® EN-A, EN-C, and EN-Z films are premium performance polyimide films designed to be used as a dielectric substrate for chip on film, high-density interconnects, and flexible printed circuits. They exhibit high modulus, superior surface quality, and excellent CTE control, making them a preferred dielectric material for very fine pitch circuity and next generation IC packaging applications

Treated on both sides, Kapton® FCRC polyimide film has an excellent balance of electrical, physical, and chemical properties and can operate over a wide range of temperatures.

This product is a combination of Kapton® 100CRC corona resistant polyimide film and a heat fusible FEP fluoropolymer film.

DuPont™ Kapton® corona resistant polyimide film is an advanced film that can withstand the detrimental effects of corona discharge. Resistance to coronas enhances service life and operational efficiencies compared to conventional insulation materials.

Kapton® 150FCRC019 is a composite film consisting of Kapton® 100CRC corona resistant polyimide film and a heat fusible FEP fluoropolymer film. In addition to the corona resistant properties, Kapton® FCRC offers excellent, physical, electrical, thermal, and chemical resistant characteristics expected with Kapton® polyimide films.

Kapton® 150FCRC019 was developed for use in rail traction as a magnet wire insulator and for industrial motors and generators under partial discharge environments where enhanced insulation life is needed.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF DUPONT™ Kapton® 150FCRC019 POLYIMIDE FILM

A general-purpose HN film, Kapton® FN is laminated or coated with a FEP fluoropolymer and is available with lamination or coating on one or both sides.

Kapton® FN is typically used for heat sealing, provides an excellent moisture barrier, and is chemically resistant.

Recommended applications for Kapton® FN are those that require a heat bondable film, or higher resistance to moisture and chemicals than uncoated Kapton® films can provide.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® FN

Kapton® FPC film has double-sided treatment and is well balanced in physical, electrical, and chemical properties with a wide temperature range similar to general purpose Kapton® HN.

This polyimide film has low shrinkage and superior adhesion. It offers superior dimensional stability and is specifically designed for flex circuit manufacturers. Kapton® FPC is the preferred material in applications where superior adhesion and low shrinkage are important.

Kapton® FWN film has double-sided treatment, and is well balanced in physical, electrical, and chemical properties with a wide temperature range.

This polyimide film is ideal for demanding magnet wire insulation applications and for hard-to-wind motors.

Kapton® FWN is multi-layered with polyimide & fluoropolymer dispersion-coated film. The fluoropolymer coating functions as a heat-fusible layer for bonding to magnet wire conductors. With superior scrape abrasion resistance, it has lower frictional properties than other commonly used polyimide materials for magnet wire insulation. Kapton® FWN is ideal for both magnet wire applications and for hard-to-wind motors.

Kapton® FWR has double-sided treatment, has a wide temperature range, and is well balanced in physical, electrical, and chemical properties.

Kapton® FWR films are used for insulation substrate applications and are polyimide-FEP fluoropolymer substrate materials with a unique balance of thermal, electrical, and chemical resistance properties.

Applicable insulation design and application of these films provides hardy, high dielectric strength insulation with enhanced hydrolysis resistance compared to other commonly used polyimide-based materials.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® FWR

Kapton® GS allows excellent “in plane” thermal conductivity when it is converted into an artificial graphite sheet. It is used in a variety of consumer electronics applications such as cell phones and tablet computers as a thermal dissipative material.

Kapton® GS film is designed to expand the processing window and improve yields during artificial graphite sheet production.

This film has uniform properties and high tensile strength allowing for controlled shrinkage during the carbonization process. Its molecular structure enables uniform formation of graphite during the graphitization process.

Kapton® GS properties allow for excellent “in plane” thermal conductivity when it is converted into an artificial graphite sheet.

Kapton® HN is a good choice for applications requiring an all-polyimide material with a good balance of properties and a wide temperature range.

Kapton® HN is a good fit in applications with very low temperatures down to-269°C (-452°F) and very high temperatures up to 400°C (752°F). It can be laminated, punched, metallized, adhesive coated, or formed.

This film is suitable for use in applications where low shrinkage and higher adhesion are paramount.

Treated on both sides, DuPont™ Kapton® HPP-ST provides the same well-balanced excellent physical, electrical, and chemical properties over a wide range of temperatures that is offered by Kapton® HN film.

This high-performance film provides superior dimensional stability and superior adhesion when used with many adhesion systems. Adhesion data for Kapton® HPP-ST can be referenced in the adhesion to Kapton® technical bulletin.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® HPP – ST

Kapton® MT and Kapton® FMT films have thermal conductivity of 0.45 W/m· K and can be used as is or laminated with other materials for additional functionality. Kapton® MT film is available in a variety of thicknesses, down to 25μm.

These Kapton® films offer thermal conductivity properties that are ideal for managing and controlling heat in electronic assemblies.

DuPont™ Kapton® MT is a homogeneous film with 3 times the thermal conductivity and cut through strength of standard Kapton® HN.

The Kapton® FMT has a fluoropolymer resin coated on both sides and in addition to all the benefits of Kapton® MT polyimide film.

Kapton® MT and Kapton® FMT films provide an excellent combination of thermal conductivity, electrical properties, and mechanical toughness for use in automotive and electronic applications.

Kapton® FMT and Kapton® MT films have higher modulus than Kapton® HN, providing improved strength to the final product.

ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES of Kapton® MT

Kapton® MT+ films have high thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/m·K with available thicknesses down to 38 μm up to 127 μm. Used as a slot liner, this film can reduce operating temperature by 20–45°C in e-motors. It can also help to Increase power out put by 10-30% for positive temperature coefficient heaters.

Kapton® MT+ is a high-performance thermally conductive polyimide film that is homogeneous, with thermal conductivity over 3 times as high as standard Kapton® while retaining the strong dielectric and mechanical properties expected in a polyimide film.

This film offers the highest thermal conductivity of any polyimide film on the market. Ideal for electronic or automotive applications, provides excellent mechanical resilience, breakdown voltage, and flexibility as substrate for an electrically isolating thermal solution.

In new slot insulation systems, it has been found that Kapton® MT+ film dramatically improves heat dissipation. This finding was chronicled in a paper that was presented at the Annual International Conference of Thermal Management for EV/HEV.

Treated on both sides, DuPont™ Kapton® PRN provides the same well-balanced excellent physical, electrical, and chemical properties over a wide range of temperatures.

DuPont™ Kapton® PRN is a heat-fusible multi-layer composite film, with Kapton® 150PRN411 being ideal for insulation of copper conductors in high temperature magnet wire applications

This film enables higher operational temperature and improved resistance to abrasion. 150PRN411 comprises a 25 microns thick layer of Kapton® HN polyimide film between two layers of high melt temperature fluoropolymer. One fluoropolymer layer is approximately ten microns thick while the other layer is approximately three microns thick.

Kapton® PST is a tough polyimide film that with an excellent balance of physical, electrical, and chemical and properties over a broad range of temperatures, particularly at very high temperatures. Kapton® PST crystalline film is designed for the pressure sensitive tape industry and is a crystalline film with superior attributes for PST coaters. Properties that help improve Coater performance include gauge control across the web, excellent roll formation, superior point thickness, and extended roll lengths. This film is available in 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 gauges.

TYPICAL ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® PST FILM

This Kapton® film is frequently used as a dielectric substrate due to its resistance to high temperatures, flexibility and toughness, and self-extinguishing burn characteristics.

Kapton® PV9100 polyimide films are flexible substrates for thin film photovoltaic (PV) applications.

These DuPont™ Kapton® polyimide films are used in commercial applications and as substrates for evaluation in thin film a-Si and CIGS photovoltaic applications, where stiffness and dimensional stability at elevated deposition temperatures are critical to producing maximum efficiency/yield solar cells. The stress at the interface during high temperature thin film deposition and processing is reduced due to the film’s low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of Kapton® PV9100 series polyimide films

Kapton® RS is an electrically conductive film for applications in which a precisely controlled surface resistivity is required.

This film was film developed for heater applications where a thin, uniform low mass heater is required.

Kapton® RS is ideal for heaters requiring temperature regulation and lightweight, uniform, or high temperature performance in industries including aerospace, wind turbine deicing, automotive interior heating and battery warming. This film is highly customizable based on the required voltage, current, and temperature. It can also be easily cut into various configurations. It is resistant to high temperatures and is highly flexible and thin.

The resistive property is inherent in film; thus, it cannot be cracked, rubbed off or otherwise easily damaged. Its uniform resistance provides precision-controlled surface temperature. Kapton® RS film is non-flammable, which can be an important factor for safety requirements in some applications.

White Kapton®

White Kapton® DuPont™ Kapton® WS Polyimide Film Specialty Product is a high performance, homogeneous, white opaque polyimide film containing no silicones, no acrylic laminates, and no non-polyimide polymers. TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® WS

Kapton® XP polyimide film is treated on both sides and has an excellent balance of physical, electrical, and chemical properties over a broad range of temperatures.

This film is used as an insulation substrate and can be coated on one or both sides with type H film that has a proprietary fluorocarbon resin. This coating provides high mechanical strength and excellent adhesion at elevated temperatures.

Kapton® XP film has high bonding strength at elevated temperatures with copper, itself, and other materials. The graphs in the technical data sheet compare retention of bond strength of Kapton® FN and Kapton® XP from room temperature to 200°C.

The film exhibits the same mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties as Kapton® FN in both high and low temperatures.

TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF Kapton® XP

DuPont™ Kapton® Type XC is an electrically conductive, black polyimide film. These films are loaded with conductive carbons that produce specific surface resistive properties. The resistive property is placed throughout the film rather than on the surface, preventing the risk of rubbing off, cracking, or otherwise being damaged, as is often seen with metallizations or surface coatings.

XC film exhibits the same excellent temperature resistance, inertness, and radiation resistance as other Kapton® films, making them an ideal choice for space and other extreme environment applications.
